The above seminar was well attended by a good cross-section of participants
from the private
corporations, government bodies, educational institutions and the TV Stations.
Introducing the range of Robotic Digital Tape Library products from Spectra
Logic, USA, the
sub-theme was “Get Rid of your Headaches!” This refers to the headaches
faced by many
organizations today when it comes to filing, cataloguing, storing and retrieving
the ever
increasing volumes of documentation physically.
The Robotic Digital Tape Library provides a part of the digitization solution
whereby the process
of filing, cataloguing, storing and retrieving can now be carried out electronically
from a
workstation attached to the network.
Spectra Logic’s products cover entry-level model to full enterprise level.
These classifications are
based on capacities (in the region of 3 TBs to 166 TBs, uncompressed) and transfer
speeds
(writing/reading). The models are interestingly named in ascending order as
TreeFrog (Spectra
2000), Bullfrog (Spectra 10000), Gator 12000 and Gator 64000. For more information

The second part of the seminar introduces a total system solution to a Digital
Library especially
where Rich Media is involved. In today’s multimedia world, information
now is packaged with
video, sound, graphics and animation and not just text alone. This seminar covers
the digitalization
(encoding) process of the analogue video, audio, graphics, etc, signals to bits
and bytes, the
retrieval process (decoding), the search and browse process, storage and archival
in a HSM manner.
It was quite a lot to absorb for the half day and for participants who wished
to have a more detailed
and focused discussion relating to their very own special needs, do feel free
